How to care for your cashmere?
Everything you need to know to preserve the softness and longevity of your cashmere pieces.
Does cashmere pill?
The making of a cashmere jumper always involves a compromise between softness and resistance to pilling. A loosely spun yarn will express the full richness of cashmere, but allows fibres to escape and form pills. A very densely spun yarn will retain the fibres more effectively, but at the expense of the characteristic softness of cashmere.
Our philosophy: softness is cashmere's greatest asset — and it is permanent. Pills, on the other hand, are only temporary if you take care of your jumper.
There is no woollen jumper (sheep or goat) that does not pill at all. It is impossible to prevent fibres entirely from escaping and clumping together under the effect of friction.
How to prevent pilling?
The fact that your jumper pills is not a sign of poor quality — this is a common misconception. Cashmere pills more or less depending on how it is worn and how it is cared for.
Essential advice
- Allow your jumper to rest for at least 2 days out of every 3. Do not wear it two days in a row, so the fibre can relax.
- Avoid repeated friction (table edges, desks, seat belts). Each person's build and habits have a significant influence on the longevity of the jumper.
- Wash it regularly. Cashmere loves water — cashmere goats live in often rainy conditions. As it dries, the fibre contracts, renews itself, and a large proportion of forming pills disappear.
Do not hesitate to use a pilling comb. Cashmere pills form soft, fluffy clusters that are very easy to remove — quite different from the small, hard balls found on sheep's wool. Unlike wool, the appearance of your jumper remains unchanged after this process, as cashmere is naturally fluffy.
How to wash your cashmere?
The delicacy of the fibre requires appropriate care. We recommend washing your jumper after wearing it approximately 3 to 4 times at most. Cashmere loves water — do not be afraid to wash it.
By machine
- Place inside a laundry bag or a pillowcase
- Select a wool or delicate cycle, cold or 20 degrees maximum
- Add a small amount of specialist wool detergent — no fabric softener
- Spin at 400 rpm maximum.
By hand
- In cold water, add a small amount of specialist wool detergent (no fabric softener)
- Press gently with your fingertips — do not wring or rub
- Rinse in cold water
- Wring in a terry towel.
Never hang your jumper on a hanger — it may lose its shape.
Fold it and store it in a dry place, away from light. Ideally, keep it in a protective cover.
Drying & ironing
Our essential care tips
- Dry flat on a terry towel so that the garment naturally regains its shape.
- Iron inside out at a medium temperature (wool setting), only once the garment is completely dry.
- Never dry near a direct heat source or in direct sunlight — UV rays and heat weaken the fibres.
Cashmere must always be ironed when clean. Never iron a garment that is still damp or soiled.
Protecting your jumper from moths
Natural wools can attract pests. A few tips to keep them away.
Moths are particularly fond of cashmere, especially when it has been worn. It cannot be stressed enough: washing a cashmere jumper in water is essential, not only to care for it over time, but also to keep moths at bay. Once clean, you may place it in a cover and store it in a dry place with cedar anti-moth balls.
Soon, a protective cover will be available on our site to help you keep your favourite jumper in perfect condition.
