Women's yak jumper

The natural properties of yak wool

Native to the mountainous regions of Central Asia, the yak grows a fine down that helps it withstand exceptionally low temperatures. This is the fibre used to make yak wool garments.

Soft to the touch, yak wool has good insulating properties. It traps air within its fibres, helping to retain body heat without always requiring a very thick knit.

Its ability to absorb some moisture also makes it comfortable to wear every day. Like cashmere, yak down can be knitted into finer or more substantial fabrics, offering varying degrees of warmth depending on their construction.

Its softness and naturally slightly fluffy appearance make it a lovely choice for a collection of fine knitwear to wear year after year.

2-, 4-, 6- or 8-ply yak wool jumpers: what’s the difference?

The number of yarn strands used in knitting helps determine a garment’s thickness and weight. With a comparable construction, the more strands used, the denser and more enveloping the knit can be.

  • The 2-ply yak jumper: lighter in weight, it is easy to wear between seasons or under a jacket in winter.

  • The 4-ply yak jumper: its more substantial knit offers extra warmth while remaining comfortable for everyday wear.

  • The 6-ply yak jumper: thicker and particularly suited to cold days, it works beautifully as the centrepiece of an outfit.

  • The 8-ply yak wool jumper: its voluminous knit offers an enveloping feel, ideal when temperatures drop.

The number of strands is not the only factor to consider, however: the cut, stitch and knit density also affect how comfortable the garment feels.

Crew neck, V-neck or roll neck: choosing the right style

Your choice of neckline shapes how you wear your women’s yak jumper, particularly when layering.

A crew-neck jumper slips easily over a shirt, leaving the collar and cuffs visible. For a more relaxed look, pair it with a T-shirt that peeks out slightly at the neckline.

A V-neck jumper draws attention to a shirt or blouse collar. It can also be worn next to the skin for a more understated silhouette.

A roll-neck jumper envelops the neck and adds extra warmth. Wear it on its own beneath a coat or, if it is a fine knit, under a cardigan.

Choose a fine knit for layering, or a thicker knit when you want your jumper to be the centrepiece of your outfit.

Which colour should you choose for your yak wool jumper?

Your choice of colour lets you match your women’s yak jumper to your tastes and the pieces in your wardrobe.

Natural shades such as beige, brown and taupe bring out the slightly fluffy appearance of yak wool. Easy to pair, they work well with ecru, black or denim pieces.

For a more contrasting look, dark colours such as charcoal grey and black lend a restrained touch and sit easily beneath a light-coloured jacket or coat.

Finally, brighter shades can add character to your outfit. Pair a colourful yak jumper with neutral pieces to let the knit take centre stage.

Caring for your yak wool jumper

Yak wool deserves a little care to preserve its softness and shape from season to season.

There is no need to wash your jumper after every wear. Airing it is often enough to freshen it up. When washing becomes necessary, follow the care label and handle the knit gently.

Dry it flat, away from sources of heat. Then store your yak jumper folded rather than hanging it up to help preserve its shape.

Some pilling may occur through friction. This is natural with delicate knitwear. To remove the pills, lay your yak jumper flat and gently use a de-pilling comb suitable for fine knits, without pulling at the fibres. Avoid picking them off by hand, as this could damage the knit.

Mahogany craftsmanship applied to yak wool

At Mahogany, we place as much importance on our choice of materials as on the way they are worked.

Our yak jumpers are made in Nepal by our partner workshop. Their cuts, stitch patterns and finishing details are designed to showcase this natural fibre while creating garments that feel comfortable to wear.

We favour designs you will enjoy returning to season after season. And because quality knitwear deserves to be cared for, Mahogany also offers a repair service, subject to the applicable terms.
